Summary/Abstract: The study addresses the self-care of municipal social workers in the context of working conditions and municipal office regulations, and the risks associated with neglecting their own care and the neglecting of their care by their employers. Self-care is defined as the multi-dimensional process of deliberate engagement with strategies for the support of the health and well-being of social workers; it is perceived as a professional competence and an essential part of the training of such professionals. Qualitative data from interviews with social workers was included in the analysis, as well as a quantitative data set collected via an on-line survey. The specific risks of not devoting attention to self-care by social workers and the various obstacles to self-care were identified by the study. Participants in the research indicated the need to change workplace conditions so as to make it easier for them to take care of themselves. Self-care should be promoted at both the organisational and systemic levels and should be seen as an integral component of professional expertise and a prerequisite for the performance of social work. New strategies should be developed aimed at supporting well-being and the reduction of stress directly in the social work workplace.
