Summary/Abstract: The concepts of the social enterprise and the social economy have, over the past decade or so, begun to emerge in a number of different contexts. The ability of the social economy and its stakeholders - social enterprises - to respond innovatively to social needs has led to the fact that its importance is growing in the global context. The economic importance of social enterprises is on the increase especially in terms of the employment of persons who experience difficulties finding work in the open market. As far as the Czech environment is concerned, the phenomenon continues the tradition of solidarity in the form of associations and cooperatives. The social economy and social enterprises exist even, though they are not legally or formally defined. In order to both disseminate the principles behind the social economy and to launch the research proper we proceeded from European initiatives that emphasise business opportunities for everyone. In this paper we introduce the methodology employed by the research team of the Department of Civil Society Studies of the Faculty of Humanities at the Charles University in Prague for the identification of Czech social enterprises.
