Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study is to demonstrate the development of both theoretical and practical opinions concerning the social economy, social economics and social entrepreneurship in post-communist Slovakia. The scientific-research and publication base focused on defining the theoretical foundations of the issues involved and the specifics of the establishment of this new social economy sector in transition economies. In practical terms a question remains concerning the roles of social entrepreneurship and social enterprises in overall employment policy with regard to various marginalised groups in the labour market (the long-term unemployed, the disabled, and otherwise excluded persons). In particular, legislative and media support for new types of entrepreneurship and new business entities is of prime importance (social enterprises, social cooperatives, sheltered workshops).
