Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on press and book editions of Anatol Stern’s long poem Europe.Wójtowicz analyses different variants of “the politics of the page” (G. Borstein) determinedby the text coding frameworks for each of the work’s editions. In this perspective,Wójtowicz crucially analyzes their “bibliological code” (J. McGann) and their relationshipto practices characteristic of avant-garde aesthetics. The combination of typography, lettering, and illustration created various variants of the poem’s meaning, which thegraphic design only intensified or weakened. The material shape resulted also from theaesthetic (and political) radicalism of interwar designs and the publishing practices ofthe time.
