Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes Polesie by F.A. Ossendowski in the context of the interwar beliefs in an exotic nature of the region, expressed in a metaphor of the “Polish jungle”. It shows how a factographical narrative accommodates elements of various discourses (natural history, military, political) and how it shaped strategies of representation. Within that strategy the modernization of Polesie was shown as a civilizing mission, strictly connected with polonization of its inhabitants.
