Summary/Abstract: Dr Aleksandar Mitrović, a lawyer, engaged intellectual, associate and editor of Serbian political gazettes, a member of parliament and author of numerous legal treatises and works in the field of ethnography, is one of the neglected and largely forgotten personalities of the political and cultural history of the maritime Serbs from the late 19th and early 20th century. Judging by the influence he exerted on his contemporaries and the importance he had in the public life of the time, dr A. Mitrović cannot be compared with Sava Bjelanović, a charismatic leader of the Serbs from the Adriatic, but he left an indelible trace in the politics and culture of this part of the Serbian ethnic group. He has remained known primarily by his editorship (1897–1899) of Srpski glas (Serbian Gazette) of Zadar after Bjelanović’s death. As the editor, he adhered to the programme of the journal and the Serbian Party from 1879. He insisted on his editorial autonomy, but found himself caught up between two currents of the Serbian movement. He published information on events in the entire Serbian ethnic area, and was particularly interested in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Due to the purportedly „Greater Serbia” ideas he propagated in the Serbian Gazette, he was exposed to pressures from the authorities, and was even incarcerated. He took a firm attitude towards the Croatian policy in the Littoral, requesting the cessation of discrimination against the Serbian population. Founding it difficult to maintain an independent position, and constantly lambasted, slandered and hindered in his work, Mitrović endured two years and a half as the editor of the Serbian Gazette and withdrew from the post.
