Summary/Abstract: Social legislation in Germany is regulated in the form of 12 so-called books, with the social care services system for the elderly and handicapped persons being covered by book 11 of social legislation - Sozialgesetzbuch (SGB) Elftes Buch (XI) - Soziale Pflegeversicherung - (SGB XI). Germany has thus responded to the fact that with increasing life expectancy, the number of people in need of assistance will also increase, accompanied by a corresponding extension in the period of care required. The article suggests that the very detailed criteria applied for the assessment of the degree of dependence in Germany might provide an example for the resetting of the criteria applied in the Czech Republic in order to eliminate the problems that currently beset the Czech evaluation process.
