Summary/Abstract: Increasing the employment of older people and the extension of working life make up one of the priority policy strategies in connection with demographic change. Important roles are played by both the setting of the pension policy and its synergy with employment policy and the setting of the conditions governing the concurrent drawing of the old-age pension and economic activity. The author assumes that differences in the employment rates of persons in higher age categories in the countries under comparison are determined to a great extent by both cultural factors and the settings of the pension system, especially the retirement age. The analysis shows that the employment rate of older persons is higher where there are less significant differences in the participation of women and men in the labour market and where the same retirement age applies to both sexes. On the basis of the analysed data, in terms of the employment rate of older persons it can be hypothesised that the Czech Republic is converging with countries with higher employment rates and their employment is contributing to reducing the significant differences evident in the participation of women and men in the labour market caused by the settings of the social and pension systems and cultural differences between the countries under comparison.
