SERBS IN CROATIA

Summary/Abstract: The text presents and discusses main indicators pertaining to position of Serbs in Croatia in the period between Croatia’s admission as a full member of the EU (in 2013) and 2018, with references to earlier periods. The first part “State of Affairs”, discusses the demographic picture of Serbs in Croatia, development and status of their main minority institutions, and their policy as a minority community in the political system of Croatia. The second part, “Problems and Challenges”, discusses hate speech against Serb community and historical revisionism and negationism present in Croatia. This part also discusses election legislation which regulates procedure of minority representatives’ election to the Croatian Parliament, disputing this right, difficulties in exercising the schools’ right to autonomy, and assimilation present among youth. The third part discusses relationship between Croatia and Serbia and its influence on the position of Serbs in Croatia.
