Summary/Abstract: In the theoretical introduction, the paper outlines Bernhard Waldenfels' main observations about the foreign and its manifestations. Emphasis is also placed on the main theses of Jan and Aleida Assmann on the construction and functions of communicative and collective memory. On this basis, the article analyzes the counterproductive approach of Sibylle Levitscharoff to describe the foreign through the prism of grotesque and hatred. The intertwining of history and fantasy and the preservation of collective memory in Dasgupta's novel “Solo” is interpreted. The connection between autobiography and fiction in Kapka Kasabova's novel “Street Without” a Name when describing life in emigration is also analyzed.
