Summary/Abstract: This article intends to reconstruct the position of the Romanian women’s in the succession process in Năsăud district in the mid-1860s. The area enjoyed a special status awarded to the border officers: social freedom, privileges and fiscal exemptions, wider and earlier schooling. The retired military became the rural elite and they had land and private‑owned houses received in their capacity of former border officers. The data are based on a sample of wills, heritage statements, donations, contracts and protocols to distribute heritage, inventories of tangible and intangible assets, wealth distribution books, codicils, statutes of private funds and foundations. By analysing the succession files, we intend to answer to a set of questions: Were the Romanian woman’s unfavoured by the legal system in Transylvania? What inheritance strategies were in place for widows? The dowry was used to exclude the daughters from inheritance?
