Summary/Abstract: The author examines the development of Brazilian church and cathedral architecture in the 20th century in light of the artistic and political views of the great architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907–2012). The birth of the Brazilian “national cathedral”, the Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida (1958–1970), is inseparable from the creation of the new Brazilian capital and the imperative to free itself from its colonial past. In the article, the author also discusses the history of the idea of the ‘ideal city’, the successful (or not so successful) foundation of capital cities in the course of history, the relationship between religion and society, architecture and society, communist utopia, and religion.
