Summary/Abstract: Gregory of Nazianzus, known foremost as a theologian and one of the four Cappadocian church fathers, is an equally important rhetorician and poet: his poetry also comprises 254 epigrams and epitaphs. This paper deals with ten epitaphs that Gregory of Nazianzus dedicated to himself. These poems, collected in the Patrologia Graeca under the section Poemata de se ipso (II, I), are considered as a part of Gregory’s historical poetry. The analysis focuses on the meaning of the epitaphs, proving that Gregory’s concise and content-rich statements reveal the depth and intimacy of his relationship to God, to others, and to himself. In spite of their brevity, the epigrams and epitaphs give the reader an insight into the human side of the church father and a saint.
