Summary/Abstract: At the time of the establishment of the First Czechoslovak Republic and in the interwar period, the health situation of the population in the territory today Slovakia was very poor. The lack of access to health care and the shortage of professional nursing staff contributed significantly to this. In addition to the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Holy Cross, the Society of the Daughters of Christian Charity was dedicated to the training of nursing staff. In the 1930s to 1950s, it founded and ran three nursing schools, in Košice (1932-1938), Nitra (1946-1950) and Trenčín (1947-1950). Based on archival research and available literature, this pilot study examines the circumstances of their establishment and functioning in challenging historical and political coordinates. These worsened considerably for the religious communities and their activities after 1945 with the rise of communist power in our country. The latter actively opposed the existence of church education, which culminated in the nationalisation of schools.
