Summary/Abstract: This paper offers an interpretation of a passage in Book VII of Plato's Laws (817b1- 817d8), where the political constitution of the fictional polis Magnesia is called the “truest tragedy”. The author argues that this statement is metaphorical and analyses the conceptual and dramaturgical premises for understanding the metaphor.
