Summary/Abstract: This study deals with the history of earthquakes in the East Carpathian area in the fifteenth century and the end of the twentieth century. We have the first information about earthquakes in the eastern Carpathian area from chroniclers, the first information being from the XV-XVI centuries. Many notes were made on manuscripts or old prints by deacons, priests or boyars. The systematic observation of this phenomenon was made only towards the end of the 19th century, the pioneer in this field being the meteorologist Ștefan Hepites. The study also stops on the violent earthquakes of 1802, 1838, 1940 or 1970 and their effects. Based on the history of the earthquakes presented above, a clear conclusion is that a major earthquake may occur in the near future. But no one knows when – all attempts at prediction so far have proved to be largely wrong.
