The cultural role of the translator: Panajotis Kondylis.

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to present the cultural role of translator based on the example of Panajotis Kondylis work and legacy. He was one of the most important Modern Greek philosophers, but beside that he was one of the most important translators specialised in translating humanities works and books. His contribution in Modern Greek culture as a translator and editor-in-chief of two important book series is worth mentioning and should be displayed as a key example of impact which can be made by a preeminent figure in the field of translation especially in case of less translated languages like Greek as a target one in this case. Initially, this paper examines the status of the translator in translation studies. In such an approach the emphasis is given on a translator as a main part of transfer between cultures. We present briefly the views held by Panajotis Kondylis concerning the translator’s activity and its aim. Then we outline his legacy presenting three stages of his activity as an inexperienced translator, freelancer and finally leader and initiator of a book series dedicated to introducing important humanities work previously unknown in contemporary Greece. The chronological order presented in this paper is our own proposal.
