Summary/Abstract: In a report from 20th 1941 Gardine de Chastelain showed that two months before he was put into direct touch with a certain Mircea Zaganescu who claimed he was able to smuggle propaganda material in Romania. He made one trip with a small selection of unimportant material which SOE gave him more as a try-out, after which he return and asked for more. As the man did not seem to be worthy of any great trust. Chastelain have to think of several thing to checking out. On asking him who were the more important Romanians amongst his acquintance. He mentioned among others Aurel Dobrescu and brothers Dimitriu from Targoviste. Chastelain asked him to contacted them and to bring back letters from them. In the case of Dimitriu, Chastelain told him to say he had met a friend who could transmit a letter in short space of time. Zaganescu returned to Istanbul and has brought the enclosed letter which is not whithout interest from several point of view. The opinion expressed by Dimitriu with regard to bolshevism was fairly universal in Romania when Chastelain was there last and it explained the enthusiasm with which Romania’s entry into war against Rusia was met by Romanian people. This entusiasm was short-lived. The Romanian custom of taking advantage of any favourable opportunity which presents itself is well exemplified in the closing paragraph of the letter. This letter presents some aspects of the early cooperation between SOE and Mircea Zăgănescu.
