Summary/Abstract: The poetic corpus of the Franciscan Diego de Valencia de León, active between 14th and 15th century in circles close to the Castilian court, consists of 42 poems of varying length. Although he was one of the main exponents of the oldest school of Castilian authors of courtly poetry, his refined work has received relatively little attention from scholars. The Italian translation of his poems, published in 2012, offers us a starting point to examine the difficulties faced by editors and translators of cancionero poetry, which are mainly due to the peculiar metrical, thematic and lexical features of this poetic school. Drawing from examples taken from the poetic corpus of Fray Diego, the translation problems and strategies used will be discussed case by case. This article intends to examine the many interesting aspects offered by the work of translating his poems into Italian. In turn, the examples analysed will be the starting point for a reflection on the problems faced by the editor and translator of cancionero poetry.
