THE DECISION ON THE DEGREE OF GOVERNMENT SUPERVISION AND PROTECTION CONCERNING THE CLERGY OF 6/18 MARCH 1817

Summary/Abstract: The decision on the degree of government supervision and protection concerning the Roman Catholic clergy and the funds in their possession was signed by Tsar Alexander I on 6/18 March 1817. However, it was never published in the Journal of Laws of the Kingdom of Poland. Nevertheless, it was in force throughout the entire period of the partitions. It regulat-ed the legal status of not only the clergy but of the Catholic Church as a religious institution in the matters of: contacts with the Holy See, communication between the clergy and the government, making appointments to church offices, admissions to religious orders, church discipline, and church funds. Compliance with this legal act was binding and the entities in the hierarchical structure of the Catholic Church and the administrative authorities of the Kingdom of Poland at various levels, especially the Government Commission for Religious Affairs and Public Enlightenment, were clearly indicated in this context.
