Summary/Abstract: In this two-part article I present an analysis of the documentation related to the events that took place in Jedwabne in 1941. In the first paragraph of the first part the historical background is presented: the Polish-Soviet war and the formation of authority in the annexed territories of Western Belarus and Western Ukraine. In the second paragraph anthropological issues are discussed, especially those relating to freedom – only a free man can be held responsible for his acts. In order to obtain a basis for moral evaluation, I explain here the subject of a moral act and its accidental features.
