Thematic Tafsir and Other Methods of Interpreting the Qur’an

Summary/Abstract: All methods of interpreting the Qur’an have the same goal of discovering and explaining its meaning and intentions, but this goal is reached in different ways. That divergence is completely understandable and justified. Some methods of tafsir are considered fundamental as starting points for other methods, so that a commentator of any method cannot avoid citing them. Thus, analytical tafsīr (al-tafsīr al-taḥlīlī) represents the basis of concise tafsīr (altafsīr al-iğmālī), thematic tafsīr (al-tafsīr al-mawḍūʻī) and comparative tafsīr (altafsīr l-muqāran). This paper examines the differences between thematic tafsir and other mentioned methods of interpreting the Qur’an.
