Are There Non-Arabic Words in the Qur’an

Summary/Abstract: In the early stage of tafsir science, Arab linguists generally rejected any suggestion that there could be any words other than those in Arabic in the Qur’an, given that the Qur’an clearly states that it was revealed “in a clear Arabic language” (Qur’an, Ash-Shu’ara, 195). Those researchers were afraid that if they allowed such a possibility, namely that there are words in the Qur’an from other languages, or even dialects other than Quraysh, they would violate the i’jaz (property of the supernatural) of the Qur’an. However, in the following centuries, especially in the compilation works by Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūṭī (1445– 1505), there is a completely different view of this important question, on which, in fact, there is and cannot be any definite, categorical position. From the context of such an understanding of the phenomenon, the goal of this paper was to present the most relevant linguistic/ exegetical and, to some extent, orientalist opinions on this issue. The descriptive-contrastive analytical method was used as the main research method. The results of the research showed that both those researchers who reject the existence of non-Arabic words and those who accept the existence of such words in the Qur’an have offered convincing scientific arguments and that their historical discussion is fruitful for anyone who studies the language and style in the context of the Qur’an as universal God’s Revelation.
