Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the perception of the religion of Islam, i.e. its fundamental sources, history and ritual practice, in the works of the eighth-century church father John of Damascus. In addition to presenting the authentic, dogmatic teachings of the Church, his works also dealt with the treatment of other religious traditions, including Islam, primarily from a Christian perspective. As the earliest Christian sources on Islam, the value judgments presented by John of Damascus on Islam significantly shaped the later understanding of Islam by numerous European authors. In the first part of the paper, after presenting the basic biographical data, the most significant works attributed to John of Damascus are presented with special emphasis on his writings treating Islam. After that, the views of John of Damascus on certain segments of the history of Islam are presented, followed by his criticism of the revelation, prophethood and some ritual dimensions within the religion of Islam.
