Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with Matić’s contribution to the linguistic tradition of the Bosnian Franciscans. His grammar handbook is analysed in correlation to older grammar books which were compiled during the 18th and 19th century for the educational needs of the Franciscan province of Bosnia Argentina. Matić’s Knjižica is part of a series of 18th century handbooks for the study of Latin, written according to the model of Josip Grigley’s grammar (Institutiones grammaticae, 1809). In light of this fact, the dependence of Matić’s work on previous tradition will be discussed. According to the author’s conception, Knjižica ručna was meant to serve as a supplement to previously published reworkings of Grigley’s grammar. Therefore, the analysis will focus on the relationship with the grammar handbook by Friar Stjepan Marijanović (Institutiones grammaticae Latinae idiomate Illyrico propositae... , 1822). Following the established pratice of his predecessors, Matić also uses Croatian as a metalanguage in describing Latin grammatical structures. Hence, his handbook is an important example of the continuity of Croatian grammatical terminology as established by Bosnian Franciscan grammarians.
