Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to show what impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on the Polish economy compared to other European Union member states. The aim is to show the most important economic effects which occurred in the conditions of active support for the economy by the government’s anti-crisis program mitigating the negative effects caused by the pandemic in 2020–21 (anti-crisis shield). The government program and labor market indicators — the unemployment rate and changes in the number of employees in industry terms — were analyzed. The situation in the European Union was discussed using key macroeconomic indicators such as GDP growth dynamics as well as the debt and performance of the public finance sector, each of which recorded the effects of the shutdown. NACE sections “Accommodation and gastronomy” and “Trade; repairs of motor vehicles” have been hit hardest by the crisis. There are also industries which have recorded positive effects despite the lockdown, e.g., “Information and communication.” Indicators of the situation in Poland from a macroeconomic perspective place it in the group of countries which effectively counteract the effects of the pandemic, which bodes well for the period of economic recovery after the crisis.
