Summary/Abstract: The acquisition of any educational content has its initial and final stage. In the process of institutional language learning, this means that a student’s input language at the beginning of his/her education is predominantly based on organic idiom of mother tongue (L1), whereas the aim language refers to the level of acquisition of the standard language idiom (L2) on completion of primary education. This applies to the teaching of Croatian as well. Different linguistic and extra-linguistic features influence the formation and level of acquisition of the target language, such as the acquired communicative competence in the dominant idiom, the exposure to language communication, the richness of the student’s vocabulary, the formation of mental lexicon, previous language knowledge, speech models (teacher, parents, environment... ), the language of textbooks and other reading, the child’s psychological and cognitive development and the structure of the Croatian standard language. A comprehensive longitudinal investigation in the area of Croatian language acquisition has been carried out as part of the scientific project entitled “Developing communicative competence in the early discourse of Croatian” (Faculty of Teacher Education, Zagreb, 2006–2010). This paper discusses only one segment of this acquisition/learning and that is the development of childhood vocabulary in the early language discourse of Croatian.
