Summary/Abstract: With Intrusul (The Intruder), Marin Preda goes beyond the area of the psychological novel and the social novel, configuring an obvious existentialist vein. In the universe of Preda’s work, Intrusul offers an extended place for ethical debates, questioning human authenticity in relation to history and society. The protagonist, Călin Surupăceanu, lives history not as a coherent totality, but as a series of disparate, shocking, often meaningless micro-histories, which make him understand the nothingness of the human being: “And since then I had understood that if you are dealing with cowards and liars, you try in vain to please them, you become their toy, as they are the toy of others, and you are no longer a man, but a rag [...]”. (Preda, 2011: 105). Placed at the center of a hostile universe and, at the same time, outside it, the intruder experiences delusions on all existential levels, seeking solace in utopia.
