Summary/Abstract: The article aims to analyze how, in the landscape of the Romanian literary criticism, Caragiale’s work was a pretext for ideological disputes. Caragiale was Manicheanly disputed by the left and by the right, being often recovered as a legitimizing force for various ideological constructions. On one hand, the conservative right accused him of a lack of patriotism, on the other hand the left movement accepted Caragiale as a conservative and reactionary member of Junimea, the socialists seeing in his texts the pamphlet aspect, oriented against progress. Beyond the canonical battle — an ideological battle, in fact, between conservatives and liberals — Caragiale’s world was also engaged in a daring form of resistance through culture, denouncing the forces of Romanian society under the Ceauşescu’s dictatorship.
