Summary/Abstract: The Balkan Peninsula, although not large in territory, is characterized by great diversity of ethnoses, cultures, languages, religions… Some of the countries were formed recently and they are still looking for their identity. This causes tension in the region and a number of problems, part of which the states are trying to solve through nationalism. The research discusses the nature of nationalism as a phenomenon, the diversities among the different types of nationalism and between Western and Eastern nationalism, its role for the development of the states in the region in historical aspect as well as in present times. The results of the nationalist parties in the last elections in each of the Balkan countries have been examined in order to be shown the role of nationalism in their contemporary policy.
