Summary/Abstract: Situated at the border of the New World, Cuba initially played an important role in its colonization. As a result of the Columbian exchange, some agricultural crops were brought to the island, and they found suitable conditions for development there. Out of these crops, sugarcane gained the most significance. The sugar produced became the main source of income for centuries. This study aims to trace the formation and development of the relation between Cuba and sugar, which grew into a series of dependencies, to clarify its importance for the development of the country, and to highlight some interesting economic phenomena.
