Modern Technology, Plagiarism Hunters, and Transatlantic Popular Culture in Sygurd Wiśniowski’s “Drzewo Latające”

Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the analogies and differences between the story “The Balloon Tree”by American writer Edward Page Mitchell and Sygurd Wiśniowski’s “Drzewo Latające”(Flying Tree). First, the author defines the concepts of “originality” and “plagiarism” inEuropean high literature of the second half of the nineteenth century, with a particularemphasis on British literature. Then the author considers the phenomenon of transatlanticpopular culture in the context of modern media and means of transportation. Finally, thearticle compares both analyzed texts, concluding that it is impossible to apply today’sintellectual property criteria to the literature of that period.
