Summary/Abstract: Contemporary society tends to show more tolerance and openness towards gender nonconformity (the situation of people who do not fit, in terms of gender identity, into the dual male- female categories). However, when it comes to the notion of family and the production of offspring, general conceptions perceive these natural aspects of life mostly as binary concepts. We conducted a scoping review of 33 articles published between 2002 and 2022, dealing with the possibilities for gender non-conforming people to become parents, aiming to highlight the opportunities available to them, the limitations and barriers they face, the changing needs of health care services in line with the specifics of this category of people, the multiple controversies raised by them becoming parents and the medical- psycho- social aspects of their struggle to start a family. At the same time, we followed how the desire to become a parent is reflected in the studied literature, in the context of the manifestation of gender identity and its social expression, including the influence of biases in the way these people perceive parenting roles and how they think they “fit” their own assumed gender identity. The number of studies on this topic is growing, as gender nonconforming parenthood is a dynamic, evolving phenomenon with significant medical, psychological, social, cultural and economic implications, but they do not yet deepen all the facets of the health needs, in general, and reproductive health, in particular, of gender nonconforming or transgender people, nor aspects of the future development of children originating from such parents. Despite controversies and the opposition that still exists to a good extent towards this phenomenon, the common conclusion that emerges from the cited literature is the ever growing need for dialogue, knowledge, understanding and communication, reason and respect for human life and rights, in general.
