Summary/Abstract: Alcohol use disorders are common in the global population. The consequences of these disorders manifest themselves at both personal and societal levels. Among the most important consequences are increased levels of somatic and psychiatric co-morbidities, accidents, legal problems, marital and family difficulties, and impaired work performance. Thus, disability resulting from alcohol use disorders can be measured by a whole variety of parameters. Objectives: Our research aims to assess some aspects of disability in a group of male patients diagnosed with alcohol use disorders. Methods: For this purpose, a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on male patients admitted to the hospital "Prof. Dr. Al. Obregia" and meeting ICD-10 criteria for alcohol use disorders. In addition to socio-demographic and clinical information, data regarding the number of missed working days and less productive working days due to alcohol use disorders and the number of psychiatric and non-psychiatric admissions in the year prior to current hospital admission were collected. Results: 50 subjects met the criteria and participated in the study. The mean number of psychiatric and non-psychiatric hospitalizations was 1.58 and 2.68 respectively. The number of missed working days and less productive working days was 2.6 and 3.68 respectively. Conclusions: Findings in our study show decrease work productivity and increase use of hospital services for psychiatric and non-psychiatric disorders as part of disabling effect of alcohol use disorders.
