Summary/Abstract: The sector of popular culture and sports gets increasing attention nowadays for it generates increasing financial flows and supports economic output. Moreover, sport activities improve physical and psychical health so vital for productive activities and work-life balance in general. However, the frequency of engaging in sport activities and the intensity of cultural life may vary according to several characteristics. In this paper we employ principal component analysis to study free time activities falling to the category of popular culture and sport before and after the last economic crisis. We use data from the representative surveys conducted in 2004 and 2009 to compare the frequencies of engaging in these types of activities in the Czech Republic. Our results suggest, that the relevant frequencies statistically significantly diminished in 2009 comparing to 2004 supposedly as the result of worsening economic situation. We employ multinomial ordinal regression to analyze socio-demographic factors related to how often the respondents engage in sports and consume popular culture. We find out, that these activities are more frequent for the respondents younger in age, earning higher incomes, more educated living in bigger cities, with smaller families, mostly males, relatively happy in their lives.
