Summary/Abstract: Archaeologists should stay away from politics as practised in the political field by paying attention to inconspicuous forms of intrusion, such as evaluation, interdisciplinarity, and the growing importance of individual credibility. The autonomy of the discipline is enhanced by rejecting ways of thinking that belong to politicized common knowledge.
