Summary/Abstract: The representation of cultural heritage as determining the authenticity of identities, associated with the ideology of collective memory, restricts cultural liberties and assists identity politics. The Faro Convention, especially through its emphasis on the participation of everyone to the interpretation of cultural heritage, is an important moment in the reconsideration of the role of the knowledge about the past in a democratic world.
