Summary/Abstract: This paper presents results of research on the reorganization of German archaeology after 1945, conducted in the archives of the German Archaeological Institute, the Romano-Germanic Commission, and the former East German Academy of Sciences. As a highly institutionalized cultural science, German pre- and protohistoric archaeology and its representatives had a close relationship with the state and this had a strong impact on the work of archaeologists in post-war Germany. In such challenging times, most of them chose well-known strategies and topics, which explains the continuity in terms of personnel and content between archaeologybefore and after the Nazi era.
