Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between scientific standards and scientific promises, using the example of prehistoric archaeology in Germany. It assumes that this relationship is nationally specific and has changed over the history of the discipline due to scientific and political factors. As a first national example, I will outline how scientific standards have developed and become established in German prehistoric archaeology. This will show what was considered the standard of archaeology at different times, what scientific promises were made, and what effects unfulfilled promises can have.
