RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEMOCRACY AND NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

Summary/Abstract: The idea of democracy as a source of world peace appeared relatively late in political (Western) thought and is consistently attributed to German philosopher Immanuel Kant. Later, Rudolf Rummel and Michael Doyle are the authors of two major variants of democratic pacifism on the one hand the general or monadic version, whose argument advocates a general/ absolute pacifism of democracies, regardless of domestic partners or opponents of the regime, on the other hand, dyadic or relational version that refers to a separate peace between democracies, while maintaining the bellicose nature of democraties in relation to nondemocraties. Thus, it is important that civil society organisations actively supervise institutions of power and peacefully challenge them.
