Summary/Abstract: Autonomous regions were, in some cases, a productive solution for areas with ethnic or religious conflicts, or in areas with tension between the majority and the minority of population. Although there is still debate about the level of autonomy, the region is still subject to a series of political processes, but not any reasons for conflict. However, as opponents of autonomy from Turkey have mentioned, geographical and ethno-cultural realities of Turkey and Middle East are profoundly different from those of Spain and Canada. The crucial element to any system of political autonomy is a high degree of decentralization, a concept considered for long to be similar to a situation of crisis by the Turkish State. Officially, the central state acts as referee of to many local policies, which causes the system to be inefficient and undesirable to many.
