Summary/Abstract: The years between the World Financial and Economic Crisis and Covid-19 put banks in a very turbulent environment. Being part of the backbone of world economy, but also being a reason for the first crisis, the banks find themselves in constant stress in fight for survival and recovery, which inevitably influences their key performance indicators. The present article aims at discovering the hidden determinants of the profitability of the banks in Bulgaria between the two crises in an environment of legal and structural transformations. Based on explored and systematized studies of the problem in region Europe, and in the context of the dynamic and structural analysis of the profitability of the banks in our country, a model for profitability assessment is presented and proven. Conclusions are drawn, and recommendations suggested, regarding results interpretation, and model extension options.
