Summary/Abstract: Leonid Leonov’s novel Russian Forest depicts the mutations of the Russian society from the Imperial to Soviet period, with glimpses into the mentality of the Soviet man and forest management as pretexts for an anti-utopian metaphorical construction. Involved in the Second World War, the new man is opposed to the representative of the old world Ŕ the German. On the other hand, the novel explores the opposition between the essential principles of character construction Ŕ simplicity vs. dissimulation. The main characters - Ivan Vikhrov as the simple revolutionary man and Aleksandr Gratsiansky as the dissimulated man of the old order Ŕ revolve around the forest issue and ways of defending Motherland during war and peace. The article aims at revealing the main facets of character construction, with a special focus on Ivan Vikhrov and Aleksandr Gratsiansky as potential alter-egos of the author. The Second World War, the Russiařs revolutionary past and the forest exploitation in peaceful both Imperial and Soviet periods are pretexts of constructing complex characters, in a multilayered and complex plot.
