Summary/Abstract: The tireless missionary activity of the Popes to the Germanic peoples was the one who gradually, through Christianity, planted the need for Rome and its "Europeanness". Christian missions in the North and Western Europe immediately resulted in the reception of good soldiers, whose conversion still allowed to see, even in the 10th -11th centuries, many pagan and arian roots. In response to the increase interference of the Popes in the control and shaping of the European states, the great feudal families of Europe tried to impose, in their turn, their own candidates to the pontifical throne, reaching up to the point that almost the entire 10th century to be wasted in struggles for the acquisition of the papal tiara. The Dukes of Spoleto, the Counts of Tusculum, the noble family of the Crescenti, and later the Ottonian dynasty will initiate devastating wars to support their favorites.
