Summary/Abstract: Imposing his sovereignty over the entire world the Pope gained the cohesion and discipline he needed so much to save his Church from the abyss. But his idea had serious risks: it was copied, as justification, in some aggressive political systems with hegemonic aspirations, it entered, inevitably, in military competition with Christian states that already possessed a solid Imperial tradition and, finally, it destroyed the original synodality of the Church.
