Summary/Abstract: Ontology is the subject of research in various fields of science, including humanities and economics. At present, ontologies are the subject of research in various research facilities, among others, engineering systems, knowledge engineering and knowledge management theory. The most important aspect from the point of view of this article is the aspect of knowledge management. The first definition created for the purpose of computing is the definition of T. Gruber in 1993. It was used in the field of artificial intelligence in order to facilitate the sharing and reuse of stored knowledge. This article attempts to present some concepts of the ontology. The selected ontology definitions created by T. Gruber, A. Bassara and A. Maedche. The principles and process of creating ontologies. The last part presents selected ontology description languages such as Resource Description Framework (RDF) and Web Ontology Language (OWL).
