Summary/Abstract: Romanian schooling was marked by attempts to reform the education system in the difficult material conditions existing at the end of the First World War and the establishment of Greater Romania, a political construction that united successor states of Russia and the two sides of the late Austria-Hungary, Cisleithania and Translethania, with multiple social, economic, cultural and educational differences. The management of the educational process was difficult, considering the existing conditions, and the political instability created great difficulties for the relevant ministry in terms of finding ways to bring Romanian schools back onto a normal path of development. Interest in the problems of pre-university education manifested itself rigorously in the programmes of the political parties, but also in the activity of the governments of the interwar period. In turn, civil society reacted strongly on the issue of Romanian education. Political misunderstandings regarding the necessary reforms in the field of education fully contributed to the creation of a state of uncertainty regarding the functioning of schools. This instability delayed the unification of the education system and the reform process.
