Summary/Abstract: The 18th century offered the European society a new view on the world promoted by the Western intelligentsia which influenced the life of the Western Church. The illuminist thought bought about a certain form of secularization of the society, an alienation from the religious life which dressed sometimes anti-ecclesiastic forms. It was in such a society that one of the greatest Greek thinkers was formed as intellectual. Although born in Corfu, under the Ottoman occupation, Theotokis studied in the great European universities and worked as professor in Corfu, Moldova and Russia. He ended his activity as missionary metropolitan with outstanding pastoral service. I shall present in the pages of this study his activity and great theological, pastoral, and missionary work.
