Summary/Abstract: In this paper I defined the notion of mask, I presented its etymology, its origins and its functions. In turn, I tried to trace the mask's trajectory in the history of universal theatre, with reference to ancient Greek and Latin theatre. At the same time, reference is made to the theatrical function of the mask, to essential notions (imaginary and image) in describing and understanding the mask's role as a theatrical object. Although they may have different shapes and can represent different characters, the masks share the ability to highlight the essence of human spirit individual. In ancient tragedy and comedy, the mask emphasizes the disappearance of the individual man behind a role or, better said, of a figure. In the complex system of the show’s signs, the mask appears as a fixed visual element, beside the decor and the other scenic objects. By wearing the mask, man awakens it while he himself retreates thus to lock up into an old, overcome period.
