IOAN MIHALYI DE APŞA IN THE CONSCIENCE OF THE ROMANIAN PEOPLE

Summary/Abstract: In this paper I tried to highlight the contribution of Ioan Mihalyi de Apsa - a prominent figure in Romanian history and culture in Maramures - to clarify the idea of the origin and continuity of Romanianism on the territory of historic Maramures. For his entire scientific activity, he was rewarded, in 190, with the prize of the Romanian Academy, being elected its corresponding member. A year later, his work was awarded the „Nasturel-Herescu„ prize by the Romanian Academy. The merit of preserving the dowry left by Mihalyi de Apşa's family was due to the director of the Maramureş Museum in Sighetu Marmatiei, Dr. Mihai Dancus, who, following the steps taken, managed to include this museum on the national heritage list through memoranda addressed to the ministers of the time.
